Feeders and systems built for sheep health and farm efficiency
The ‘Canimbla’ Sheep Feedlot, established in 2014, is located about 15 km north-west of Cowra, NSW. It forms part of a mixed farming enterprise spread across three properties and holds around 2,500 head of sheep. Built on non-arable land, the feedlot is used to finish 2nd cross lambs, starting at 38–40 kg and reaching a feedlot turn-off weight of 60–65 kg. We handle between 600–1000 head.
Feeding Program
A typical ration is 65% barley, 10% cracked corn, 20% lupins and 5% concentrate, providing 12–13 MJ DM/kg of energy and 14–16% protein. Lambs enter at around 40 kg, after drenching, vaccination (5-in-1), vitamin boosters (A, B12, D & E) and shearing if required. When inducting lambs, oats are added at 40%, replacing 40% of the barley.

- Automated feeding, ID, weighing and drafting systems – reducing labour to less than 8 hrs per week
- 12 pens arranged in two rows, constructed with sheep and cattle rail for durability and longevity
- On-site grain mixing system with silos for 75 t barley, 25 t oats, 50 t lupins, and 25 t concentrate
- Three variable-drive augers allow precise adjustment of energy–protein content
- Mixed ration delivered via spring auger PVC tube to self-feeders
- The system delivers 1 tonne per hour, while 1,000 lambs consume 1.2–1.5 tonnes per day

Boyd Feeders are made from Australian steel and are available ex-factory, at major field days, and through rural resellers. We also design feedlots tailored to farmers’ individual needs.
